Article Alisa Hakim & KSSU DJs

What’s the perfect Valentine’s Day movie? That depends on who you ask! From epic love stories to underrated gems, KSSU DJs are sharing their all-time favorite romantic movies and why they hold a special place in their hearts. Whether you’re looking for something sweet, dramatic, or totally unexpected, we’ve got a recommendation for you!

One of my favorite romantic movies is La La Land (2016) because it captures both the enchantment of love and the bittersweet journey of chasing dreams. The film is also just a visual masterpiece, with stunning cinematography that makes every frame feel like a painting whether it’s the glow of city lights or a dance under the stars. The music is just as captivating, blending jazz and heartfelt lyrics that bring out the emotions of the story in a way that words alone couldn’t. But what truly makes La La Land special to me is how it portrays love not just as a fairytale, but as something deeply intertwined with personal growth, ambition, and the choices we make. It’s the kind of film that sticks with you, not just for its beauty, but because it understands that life doesn’t always go as planned and that what makes it so compelling.

Bones and All takes the cake for me when it comes to romance in film. It is the story of a first love between two young drifters, one of whom is new to the lifestyle. The audience watches this love blossom in the midst of Reagan’s America, where there is a rare hereditary cannibalism that eats away at the poor souls who are inflicted. It is a story that chronicles a love so intense that it becomes all-consuming. This love is something unlike anything I had seen portrayed in a movie before. It is a feeling so deep that I could not begin to do it justice in this article. The movie can be interpreted in many ways, and its execution leaves bits and pieces to lead you to a wide array of valid interpretations, but at its core, Bones and All is a story about love. It is visceral, it is vulnerable, and it is honest. If you can stomach its premise, you will be rewarded with one of the most unique viewing experiences of your life.

Mamma Mia! is a fun, campy romance about a Greek single mother, Donna, who is preparing for her daughter Sophie’s wedding but ends up reconnecting with old friends and past lovers, culminating in a heartfelt, happy ending where everyone finds their person. Set to the timeless music of none other than the classic disco band ABBA, it’s a delightful experience for those who love musicals, mother-daughter bonding, and dramatic outfits.

Every song in Mamma Mia! is performed beautifully, from the vocal talents of Meryl Streep to the vibrant cinematography. Classics like Dancing Queen, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, and Lay All Your Love on Me were the original reasons I watched this movie. These tracks are endlessly used in DJ remixes, and I often find myself humming an ABBA tune at least three times a week. I had to learn the context behind these songs, and the film brought the tracks I loved so much to life.

I would recommend Mamma Mia! to any fan of musicals or romance movies.

Favorite romantic movie, huh? To be honest, I don’t think I have a favorite romantic movie. If you listen to my show, you probably already know that I’m a big Hindi Cinema fanatic. I love Hindi Films so much that I’ve probably watched every single one. And when it comes to romance in Bollywood, choosing just one favorite feels impossible. The industry is overflowing with love stories, each bringing its own charm, drama, and unforgettable moments. Almost every Bollywood film, regardless of its genre, finds a way to weave in a romantic component—whether it’s a grand love story or a subtle subplot.

However, just to name a few movies, here are some of my recommendations:

Let’s start with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ)—the ultimate Bollywood love story. It’s got everything: young love, rebellion, strict parents, a picturesque trip to Europe, and of course, the iconic train scene. Raj and Simran’s journey from strangers to soulmates is nothing short of magical. And the song sequences? Absolutely unforgettable. Tujhe Dekha To is still one of the most romantic songs ever filmed—Raj standing in a mustard field, his arms open wide as Simran runs toward him. Oh, how romantic! (Side note: ever since I saw this scene as a kid, I’ve always wanted to have a picture taken within the sarson ka khet and have my little Bollywood moment.)

Then, there’s Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, a fun, chaotic love triangle that blends comedy and romance effortlessly. Watching Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, and Akshay Kumar in this hilarious yet heartwarming film makes you root for love while laughing at the madness.

If you’re into old-school romance, Maine Pyar Kiya is a must-watch. It’s one of Bollywood’s most iconic love stories, filled with innocent romance, emotional depth, and of course, the famous “Friend” cap that became a symbol of young love.

The list doesn’t end there, but if I had to start somewhere, these movies are perfect. Whether you love grand gestures, love triangles, or simple yet deep connections, Bollywood has it all. So, if you ask me for my favorite, I’ll say—why choose just one?

Ah, Valentine’s Day. The day when love is in the air, chocolates are on sale, and we all secretly hope for a grand romantic gesture that involves a love declaration, yearning, and maybe a really expensive bouquet. Whether you’re paired up or flying solo, it’s the perfect excuse to dive into some classic romantic/rom-com films.

Let’s be real, not all romantic films are created equal or good. Some make us believe in love, while others leave us wondering how much actual love is involved in the plot (looking at you, The Notebook). So, not only will I show you some of my favorite romance movies/stories but also break down the top romantic films that deserve your attention this Valentine’s Day – and a few that are hilariously absurd but still make our hearts swoon in their own weird way.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

My personal all time favorite, the whirlwind romance to the deliciously chaotic family dynamics, this film serves up a healthy portion of heartwarming moments with a side of hilariously awkward cultural clashes. I love this film not only because it’s Aiden from Sex And The City, but also it’s a film where it is about couple love and family love. The leading male falls in love with a Greek-American woman, and he not only wins her love over, but must win over her big greek family’s love too. Also, don’t get me started on the makeover scene. Romance movies always make the makeover scene for the female lead to change to get a guy (remove the glasses and BOOM she is beautiful). But in this film, the female lead – Toula, changes herself appearance wise, education wise, and occupational wise so she can feel better about herself. Whether it’s the witty humor, the heartwarming moments, or the sheer absurdity of the whole thing, it’ll make you want to hug your family (and maybe hide the Windex). If you’re feeling down, just remember: there’s no problem that can’t be solved with a little bit of love and a whole lot of lamb.

10 Things I Hate About You – The OG Teen Romance

The movie that made us believe a high school bad boy could totally be the one. Who could forget Heath Ledger’s swoon-worthy serenade of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”? That’s the real reason why I watched this movie. Seriously, if you’re not crying at the sight of him in the bleachers, are you even alive? And Julia Stiles? Total icon! Their enemies to romance are so wholesome and cute, but also serves with a bit of a twist. This rom-com gives us everything we want: Shakespearean drama, high school angst, and a love story that defies everything you knew about teenage rebellion. The soundtrack of this movie is amazing and totally ‘90s by the way.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

This movie is a masterpiece. Ryan Gosling plays a smooth-talking, relationship guru who decides to take Steve Carell’s character under his wing after his wife leaves him after being unfaithful. The twist? Steve’s character is an emotional mess, and Ryan is too perfect to be real. Their chemistry is hilarious, and the plot is full of heartwarming moments that make us think, “Maybe I do want to learn how to pick up women at a bar… after a few tequila shots.” Plus Emma Stone is in it and to me personally, makes it 100 times more hilarious. If I were to compare it to anything, I’d say it is a modern, Midsummer’s Night’s Dream as everyone is falling in love with the wrong people.

If you love comedic jump scares but cute and sincere lovey-dovey moments, you’ll love this movie.

When Harry Met Sally – Can Men and Women Really Be Friends?

This one’s a classic, and for good reason. It’s got everything—charm, wit, quirky moments (who can forget the famous diner scene?), and Billy Crystal’s attempt to convince Meg Ryan that their relationship can never turn romantic. Spoiler: it does. It’s heartwarming, it’s funny, and it’s the movie that proved that sometimes, the best relationships come from just being friends first. And if you’re still skeptical about this, well, I bet you’ll change your mind once you hear Meg Ryan’s very specific “I’ll have what she’s having” line.

Pride and Prejudice – Best Romance/Period Piece of All Time?

If you want a movie that’s a little bit of everything, enemies to lovers, love at first sight, period pieces and classic heroines - Pride and Prejudice is for you! Introduced to me by my sister, I find it a new (despite the story being over 200 years old) favorite of mine. If you also are a fan of Bridgerton, and a fan of men yearning, then god yes! It is in this movie! I am a personal fan of yearning and believe we should bring it back, and bring back silent men with huge countryside estates.

The Princess Bride – “As You Wish” (And Yes, It’s Totally Romantic)

Okay, so hear me out—The Princess Bride is not your traditional romance film, but it’s the romantic movie that gets everything right. You’ve got true love, revenge, sword fights, giants, and of course, the best dialogue of all time (“Inconceivable!”). The romance between Buttercup and Westley is wholesome in a way that makes you believe in fairy tales while simultaneously questioning how anyone could get through a kidnapping, a boat chase, and a giant, all while staying so committed to their love. Again with the yearning, it is here! A man who years for a woman who yearns for him after they part of years?! Yes – I think so!

If you’re looking for romance with a healthy dose of fun and adventure, this one’s for you.

Bridget Jones’s Diary

Lastly, Bridget Jones’s Diary, because sometimes, we just want to be ridiculously dramatic but also see ourselves in other women - even if they are the most talented and beautiful Renee Zellweger. Bridget Jones has the most charm I have ever seen, as she is a hot mess but so relatable. Bridget is a thirty-something single woman, struggling with the same insecurities, relationship dramas, and body-image issues that many of us face and she uses a personal (the audience) diary, a clever narrative device, provides insight into her most intimate thoughts, insecurities, and comedic self-reflections. Bridget Jones’s Diary is the love triangle that has become iconic in romantic comedy history. On one side is Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant), the charming, suave, yet ultimately selfish man who represents Bridget’s ideal of a dashing, sophisticated love interest. On the other side is Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), the reserved, gruffy, yet deeply caring man who, on the surface, seems worlds away from what Bridget thinks she wants, but is what she needs. It’s an affirmation that it’s okay to be a little messy, a little unsure, and still find your own happy ending.

Whether you’re swooning over forbidden love in Pride and Prejudice, laughing at awkward teenage romance in 10 Things I Hate About You, or just watching Ryan Gosling do whatever he does best, there’s a perfect romantic movie for everyone this Valentine’s Day.

Grab a blanket, cuddle up with snacks or someone (wink wink), and enjoy the good, the bad, and the hilariously absurd in the world of rom-coms. After all, who needs real romance when you’ve got a TV screen full of dramatic, cinematic love stories to make your heart swoon and then watch TikTok edits when you are done?! Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
